View Full Version : Truncate Posts (ie. Read More)

I'm wondering how to display just one full post on the homepage, and then have subsequent posts truncated with a "read more" option.
Is there a way to do this easily?
Or through the editor?

Is the full post on the home page going to be one specific post?
If so install a plugin such as WP Sticky and then go back into edit for that post and select the sticky option.
This will tie it as the first post on the home page.
If you want it to be the ONLY post on the home page then change it to a page and then use the static page option in 'Settings' - 'Reading'
To truncate other posts decide where you want the post to truncate and push the 'More' button in the post editor.
It's the icon that looks like a page with a blue horizontal line through it, 4th from the right, top row.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I'm not sure that any of these *quite* do what I'm looking for.
I definitely don't want ONE post to be sticky.
I want the top post to change as I post new posts.
As it stands now, the home page shows 10 posts.
What I'd like is for post one to show in its entirety. Then posts 2 through 10 to truncate after, say, 10 lines.
Here is an example: http://www.phoenixrealm.com/
Maybe this is set in the editor?
Thanks for the help... much appreciated.

OK, after looking at your example I would guess that the author is doing it manually, after all, 12 posts in a year doesn't need a lot of automation.
This is simple to do, and adds a few seconds to the normal post time.
When you add a new post enter it in full, then save it.
Then edit the previous post and add the 'more' tag wherever you want it to truncate (obviously you need to edit your existing posts as well).
In this way only your latest post is in full, all the previous ones are truncated.
Obviously this can't work if you are auto posting content and is a bit too much work if you are posting dozens of new posts a day, but for a few posts a week quite easy.
I haven't been able to find a plugin that does this.... anyone fancy writing one?

I can see us adding a custom "featured" post mod that works like this in the near future... not a fancy mod with graphics, but one which merely displays the latest featured post at the top of the index page..
And that being said.. I'm going to make a post in the plugins section in a minute.

That makes sense.
I guess it's a bit of work upfront, but once you're caught up, you just have to add the more tag to the previous post and you're done.
No big deal at all!
