    Question monetization & ethics

    Hello,

I want to setup a site about my fav band using Socrates with content that's primarily coming from youth and music magazin articles back from the mid-80's.

Besides my own material, I have received also a big part of these articles from other collectors that scanned them and converted them into pdf format, but they do not seem to really want to do anything else with it.

I'd like to know whether it would be unethical if I post these articles in re-written format next to the original pdf / picture and embed Google-Adsense as well ? I'm just worried that other fans (who are supposed to be my regular visitors) or even some of the band members will complain and/or feel ripped off.

    Appreciated your thoughts on this.

    regards,
    zella

I'm not a lawyer but I believe if you credit the source for each article you are in good shape. Just don't make it look like you are the author - that would be plagiarism.

    Hi Lynnth,

    thanks for the quick reply.

Yes, the idea is to take the original article (which sometimes are hard to read on the original scan) and post it with the source mentioned next to the scan.

I'm just not sure if adding Adsense in between would be an ok thing to do or rather not ?!

Are there other examples out there where fan-pages have been monetized without any probs ?

    best regards,
    stef

You could probably write a brief introduction about the pdf and who the source is and then link to it. Make it a post and use your adsense.

    Example:
"I recently read an article by "author name' which really makes good points about "topic". He/she really goes into depth about "topic" and makes it really clear. So on and So on.....If you would like to read the entire article...click here (link to pdf)

What your asking is a very slippery slope. I would not do it unless you rewrite the articles and use snippets of content referencing all the sources.

Spend 10 minutes searching Google for things like..

    old magazine copyrights

    Search Yahoo Answers using:

    magazine copyright

You'll find a ton of discussion on this topic.

I am not familiar with them, but I doubt there would be a conflict. Google only sees it as a conflict if it is another context based ad service that looks at your site to decide what to display.

Thank You. Better to ask than to be sorry later.
