My Socrates Magazine site Old Dogs New Care is a small review site I started after our elderly dogs started to need a lot of special care. It's more of an experiment in using Socrates and the Author hReview plugin than a real marketing site, but I've had some fun with it.

I used the Earth color scheme with a couple of minor changes and uploaded my own banner and background images. The Home page uses the Magazine 1 template and is set as the static Home page in WP Settings/Reading. An empty page named Blog is designated as the Posts page in WP Settings/Reading. The slider is the default dimensions and uses featured images for posts in my Featured category. I added the Featured category so that I can easily change the post images that appear in the slider.

The site uses the following plugins to manage the display of content:

Sidebar:
Category Posts Widget — Displays links for posts in the Product Reviews category.
Better Tag Cloud — With simple list format for tags.

Post Content:
Amazon Product in a Post — Uses the Amazon Product Advertising API to pull individual product images and prices from the amazon catalog. To use this plugin, you must be an Amazon Associate and sign up for an API ID. Generally, there's no need to use a plugin to display Amazon products unless you want to include prices (which change frequently).

Author hReview — Plugin that displays the hReview microformat boxes on the product pages and star ratings on home page. The Socrates stars are prettier, but I didn't need the button.

Fast Secure Contact Form — Because I was using it before switching to Socrates theme and it includes Captcha.

Child Theme:
I copied the provided Socrates child theme to my themes folder to make a few minor changes to the appearance of the site. The child theme folder includes a styles.css file. I like a body font of about 13px with line-height: 1.5 to add more space between lines everywhere, and a line-height of 1.6 in .post .entry. To remove some of the borders, set the width to 0px or use display: none. A dark gray font color (#333) instead of black also makes the pages look less "black."
