Yes that was the one I changed but it didn't work.
All the files in the file path are set to 755 except public.html which is set to 750.
Should I change any of these?

No, don't change the permissions, but try saving another image via Header > Uploads. If that doesn't work you can right click and view the image from the header panel and then save... and then upload via FTP to see if that works.
It's very strange that the header is not in the uploads folder.
As far as the other installs, and google penalties. I can't even remotely comprehend why anyone would suggest setting up
a different wordpress install for every page. Trust me you only need one install.
All google wants is quality original content and they love Wordpress blogs. Just use Wordpress as it's designed and there's nothing to worry about..

I've just tried your suggestion and no joy - I really don't know what is wrong with it. Could it be something else? Are you able to take a look for me?

It's either a media path or a permissions problem.
If you want to submit a support ticket with your wordpress and ftp info support can take a look.

There's really only one kind of FTP details. The hostname, username and password you use to FTP.
Leilani will share with me if she can't resolve this.
