Exclamation Socrates Banner Exchange Beta - Testers Needed

    Hey everyone,

I haven't been on the forum lately because I have been busy working away on the banner exchange for the next version of Socrates. I am happy to announce that it is almost ready but needs to be tested before we let all Socrates users start using the system in the next version.

This post is an open invite to all of our dedicated forum members to help us test the banner exchange system and get an advanced look at what is in store for the next version of Socrates. You can sign-up and create an account here:

    http://banx.socratestheme.com/bx/Eas.../user_join.php

If you have any issues, thoughts or feedback please post theme here. Keep in mind that it is still in testing at this point. We would love your feedback, ideas and are open to changes.

A few notes on banner exchanges for those not familiar with them.

    What is a banner exchange?
A banner exchange is a system where you place a bit of code for the banner exchange system on your site and show ads for other users in the system. In exchange for showing ads of the other users your advertisement is shown on their pages. It is essentially a 'traffic exchange'.

What size banner ads does the system use?
Currently the system is setup to use 125 x 125 pixel banners. We may add additional size banners to the exchange in the future if there is demand.

I don't have a banner for my site and making one is complicated
There are many banner generator websites around the internet such as this one http://www.bannerfans.com/banner_maker.php that you can use to easily create a banner image. On this particular site you need to select the 125 x 125 large button from the size drop down. Click the update banner button whenever you want to see your changes reflected in the preview above. Click the download banner button when you are done and save the banner to your computer.

Does my banner have to link back to my site?
No, you can use any banner and link to any site you want with impressions you earn or buy. You can even promote an affiliate link+banner (such as Socrates) with your impressions if you don't want to promote your own site.

If you have any other questions feel free to post them here and I will try to answer them.

Jon, tried setting up a banner and said my URL is invalid. What URL do we put in there? I was just starting off with an affiliate banner and link and put my affiliate URL.

    Hi Jon,
What a great tool! Thanks. I have a couple of quick questions related to the 'Create an Ad' section: what URL is required? My website URL?

Also, for the banner code: I wish to start with the affiliate code for Socrates. Is it the text file with the code that I upload from the Browse button?

    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    Liz

    Liz,

If I am looking at this right, the URL would be your affiliate link url and the banner would be a 125x125 banner that you would download to your computer and then upload in the ad builder.

Your website will be in the rotation when you put that long code into your site, thats how your site is entered.

Of course, I could be wrong.....

    Hi EHiatt,

    Thanks for the info.

If I am planning on promoting the Socrates theme, then the code is already accessible and I don't need to create a new banner. I am not planning on promoting my website just yet as it is still a major WIP [Work in Progress! LOL].

If I am right, and you want to promote socrates, your URL would be

    http://YOURID.wpthemes.hop.clickbank.net

and then you have to upload your 125x125 banner from your computer the socrates home page has the banners for download.

Thanks so much. So what I am understanding is that I would need to save the IMAGE that is accessible from the member's download area. Is that correct?

Okay, this is starting to make sense to me. I wonder if it wouldn't be helpful to 'read' the banner exchange code that we insert into our websites....to further help to understand it all. Sometimes it just doesn't pay to know a little bit about a lotta stuff! LOL

Anyway, I will try that and see what happens.

    Thanks so much, EHiatt.

Yes, just go to the Socrates Home page and go to affiliates and right click and save the 125x125 banner to your computer. You're Welcome!

    Jon,

If I have a site thats gets lot of traffic, can people pay me directly for impressions? If impressions are bought now, who are we buying them from and does our ad go on their site?

EHiatt, did you ever get your URL to work? It sounds like you are doing it correctly and all your assumptions when explaining it to lizv were correct. Be sure it has an http:// in front of it. PM me the URL you are entering if it still isn't working.

Currently we have the exchange running where you get 1 impression on another site for every 2 impressions you deliver to the exchange on your site. This leaves a 50% impression overhead that will fill with bonus impressions for clicks on your banners and for referrals. The purchased impressions would also come out of this inventory. There is no way for you to sell impressions directly on your site. We are going to monitor the system running with these numbers during this testing period and may make tweaks.

We actually aren't quite ready to sell impressions yet even though the system might let you complete a purchase. I would hold off on it until next week if you were thinking about purchasing some.
