    Default Socratese wont upload

    I now use WP 3.0, Super Cache is not installed.
    I have just downloaded Socratese but when I try to upload it as per instructions using FTP am getting problems.
    Have tried using both Exployer & Firefox.
    Messages I get each attempt include :
    [1]could not find directory./public_html.
    [2]could not create directory./public_html
    [3]installed but incomplete.must have stylesheet and a template.

    I checked on APPEARANCE EDITOR and get the description;
    style sheet missing
    Went to cpanel and deleted the socratese files.

    I then started from scratch again and same happens.
    could not find directory./public_html

    I checked again in WP - APPEARANCE EDITOR and get same description;
    style sheet missing.

    I am stuck, seems style sheet is the problem but what do I need to do?

    This appears to be an issue with Wordpress and some hosts.

    Often after running a WP upgrade the permissions on the host change, something to do with assigning permissions to 'Nobody' and the way that suPHP and PHPsuExec deal with this.

    Effectively cPanel has assigned file permissions to 'Nobody' which means you, as a logged in user, do not have access to change the content of certain folders such as the upgrade folder that is used when you install Socrates through the WP admin area.

    This thread explains a little more:

    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/411611

    I have one of my hosting servers that does this and so far I haven't found a permanent fix to sort this out so I revert to installing my themes and plugins through FTP which works.

    If you have access to FTP or File Manager then you have a couple of options:

    1)

    • Go into your wp-content folder and delete or rename the folder called 'upgrades'
    • Then create a new folder called 'upgrades' and give it 777 permissions
    • Retry the Socrates install through your WP admin area

    OR

    2)

    • Unzip your Socrates zip file that you downloaded from the members area.
    • Upload the 'socrates' folder that was created including all the files and folders that are underneath it (make sure that you don't have a second socrates folder underneath the first one!)
    • Go into WP admin and activate the new Socrates theme that will be there
    • Configure the theme through the Socrates admin section in WP

    If this all sounds a bit complicated PM me a WP admin and FTP login and I will do it for you.

    This really is an irritating fault but appears to be not related to any particular theme or plugin, simply the way that cPanel deals with file permissions at times.

    If anyone finds a permanent fix post it here as there are may sites affected by this issue (nothing to do with Socrates) and a lot of other WP users will be grateful to have some way of sorting it.

    Thankyou very much. Was a pleasant surprise to go into WP admin this morning and find you have done it all. I owe you a beer or 3.
